Week 2 Prototype
Hey! Week 2 has just finished for our game and we have both created new prototypes. The theme this week was 'corrupted vision', so we both made some progress along with messing around with some key features.
Lauren's part:
This week I began looking at how I could develop the core gameplay mechanics in a different way to the original design.
The original concept for this game was inspired by Mirror’s Edge, which uses very tight controls and has very precise movement mechanics. Faith has a set jumping distance, and her movement is very realistic to how a human being would move within the world. For this week’s theme of Corrupted Vision, I decided to go for a less realistic game feel, and change the in-game setting to space. I changed how the in-game gravity affects the player and this allowed for much higher, longer jumps. Without the restriction of the more precise controls, more possibilities are opened up to develop the movement and jumping mechanics further.
I found that this prototype was more enjoyable to play.
Rachel's part:
This week I added the features of moving platforms and checkpoints into the demo, and added some more parkour to show these off. Both of these features will be in the main game to both help and hinder your playing.
For the 'corrupted vision' theme I decided to move around the controls, so instead of W being used to move forward it is used to move back, and A being used to move right instead of left. These controls are supposed to be a huge hindrance, and cause you to think more when playing, turning the ideal fast paced parkour into a slow paced one. This made the game less enjoyable, but hopefully the new features can be reviewed while this is being played, and it is an easy fix in future.
From the playtest with my classmates last week I got lots of valuable feedback. One mention was that the FOV and camera bobbing were a bit off so I have adjusted both of these to feel smoother. I also turned on toggle to crouch and changed the button back to control.
This week I want to get feedback on the moving platforms, and if players should stick to them or not.
