Alpha Build Playtest (Week 10) Dev log

Today we had the playtest for the alpha build of this game.

In the lead up the playtest, we made significant updates to the UI, Level Design, Assets and game logic.

  1. The Helmet HUD UI is now more streamlined and slightly transparent  so players can better see the platforms beneath them.
  2. The Height meter display has been removed to put more focus on the oxygen management system.
  3. Placeholder assets for the planets, platforms and collectable objects have been replaced with polished completed assets.
  4. The layout of the platforms and overall design of the environment has been updated to guide the player better.
  5. Game logic was added to link scenes together, load in the final cutscene and track the players progression throughout the game.

The game is in a stable, playable state, and the core gameplay loop is completely operational.  The title screen, menus, UI, and cutscenes have been completed and audio/sound effects are implemented throughout.  Based on the feedback we received from our playtesters today, there's a small number of changes to be made, primarily regarding the layout of the level and signposting for the player.

Our game definitely is suitable to alpha testing, as it uses "standard" PC controls that are relatively intuitive, and the game's  premise is simple item collection and low gravity platform hopping.
